the fox and the hare

tick-tock, screamed the clock: I’ll race you to the end of the road

flying seconds tumble down
 onto my skin
my empty hands, lonely
sssssssssss       empty of you

so many
                  things, left
unsaid; put on hold
       the feelings
the love I at last
         felt ready for–
             to give

is time our greatest pursuer?
    the universe’s

time, the unwavering enemy
        of man
of us, two foxes

could I wait
sssss forever? no,
but how long,
how much

when the heart’s
an anxious fellow
and it insists on

   and break-
but never hurting
for you.
