the fox and the hare

tick-tock, screamed the clock: I’ll race you to the end of the road

flying seconds tumble down
         now
 onto my skin
my empty hands, lonely
             kisses
empty
          empty
sssssssssss       empty of you

so many
                  things, left
unsaid; put on hold
       the feelings
the love I at last
         felt ready for–
 ready
             to give
in
      to

is time our greatest pursuer?
    the universe’s
fastest
               mischief?

time, the unwavering enemy
        of man
of us, two foxes

could I wait
sssss forever? no,
but how long,
                         yes
how much
                   more?

when the heart’s
an anxious fellow
and it insists on

                           jumping
   and break-
                   ing
but never hurting
for you.
